Backup Windows 10 – File History

After setting up my Thecus N4310 NAS the other day, I thought I should really start making backups of my Windows 10 computers.

Windows 10 has a new feature called File History, which essentially works like Apple’s Time Machine – except it isn’t gay, and you are not a total wanker if you use it. The evidence for this claim is that NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT FILE HISTORY, therefore the people using it aren’t complete wankers. There are also no products like Time Capsule associated with File History, produced by Microsoft – it’s simply there, and Microsoft don’t want any extra money because you decided to use it.

I noticed that unlike the Windows 7 Backup and Restore app, that File History will happily store data to any location such as a network share (such as my NAS) even in the home edition of Windows 10.

Another advantage over the Windows 7 version, is that you can now specify how long you want to keep your backups, so you don’t fill up hard drives with stupid assumptions made by Microsoft.

And compared to the Backup Utility that shipped with Windows XP and earlier, the interface is , simple, so simple in fact an 80-year-old could probably setup a backup solution for themselves.

I’ll end with my feedback to Microsoft for their efforts: about fucking time.
